Introduction to Maple 10 or higher

Gilberto E. Urroz - ph. 435-797-3379 - gilberto.urroz@usu.edu - ENGR 223 - fax 435-797-1185

Maple availability

Maple 10 or higher is available in computer rooms across campus, or it can be purchased at the University bookstore.  Also, a copy of Maple for installation in your computer can be obtained from the Computer Science Department, whose office is located in the 4th Floor of the OLD MAIN building.  Borrow the installation DVD or CD from the office front desk attendant.  You will need to have your University ID to request the installation materials.  When installing the software you will need an Internet connection and a valid USU mail address and password.

Introductory assignment

This assignment is aimed at getting you to learn the basic operation of the symbolic mathematical package Maple 10 (or higher versions) for subsequent use in probability and statistics.

Download the following documents

NOTE: You may want to print the pdf files (DOCUMENTs 1 and 2) for easy reference.  Be warned, though, that the two pdf files amount to about 120 pages.  As an alternative, you can print DOCUMENT 1 (56 pages) and work out of the Worksheet in DOCUMENT 3, while reading DOCUMENT 2 in your computer.

Visit a computer lab and open a Maple 10 (or higher) worksheet, then, using DOCUMENT 1:

  • Read pages 1 through 21 (try the examples shown in your own Maple 10 worksheet)

  • Do Exercises 1, 2, 3, in pages 21 and 22

  • Read pages 23 through 43 (try the examples shown in your own Maple 10 worksheet)

  • Do the Exercise in page 43

  • Read pages 44 and 45 (try the examples shown in your own Maple 10 worksheet)

  • Do the Exercise in page 45

  • Read pages 46 and 47 (try the examples shown in your own Maple 10 worksheet)

  • Do the Exercise in page 47

  • Read pages 48 through 58 (try the examples shown in your own Maple 10 worksheet)

  • Save your Maple worksheet under the name "<YourLastName>_Worksheet1.mw"

Open the Worksheet (DOCUMENT 3), and following the instructions in DOCUMENT 2, try the different exercises included in the worksheet, i.e.,

  • Read pages 1 through 9 (try the examples shown in the DOCUMENT 3 worksheet)

  • Read pages 10 through 12 (skip exploration of Tutors and Advisors, try these at a later time)

  • Read pages 13 through 62 (try the examples shown in  the DOCUMENT 3 worksheet)

  • Save your Maple worksheet under the name "<YourLastName>_Worksheet2.mw"

Save the two worksheets saved above into a zip file ("<YourLastName>_CEE3030.zip"), and e-mail this zip file to me at: gurro@cc.usu.edu before the assignment deadline.
