INTRODUCTION
  • This web site provides basic information on programming with FORTRAN 77 using g77 (a free FORTRAN 77 compiler) .
  • FORTRAN source code can be created with the PFE editor.   Instructions on using this text editor are provided below.
  • Both FORTRAN g77 and PFE are available at the College of Engineering's PC Lab (EL 105).  Instructions on using these two programs at the PC Lab are provided below.
  • Links are also provided for free online courses and tutorials to get you started programming with FORTRAN 77.
  • Follow the links below for downloading the software and to link to online courses.
  • For additional information on Fortran 77, visit my FORTRAN 77 web page.

Software download

Download the following files and save them with the given name in your desktop or c:\ drive

Then, click here to see the instructions for installing the software.  Instructions for using g77 and PFE are provided below.

If you encounter difficulties in using g77 after downloading software from and following the instructions in this web page, try the instruction documents and software download in my FORTRAN 77 web page.

FORTRAN g77 and PFE Instructions

FORTRAN g77 is a free compiler provided by the Free Software Foundation's GNU Project. To create the source files you can use the PFE editor.  Instructions for both FORTRAN g77 and PFE are available below.

If you will be using PFE and g77 at the PC Lab, follow the instructions below.  If not, visit the online courses link below.

Using FORTRAN g77 and PFE at the PC Lab

FORTRAN g77 and PFE are available at the College of Engineering's PC Lab (EL 105).  Here are the instructions for using these programs in those computers:

  • To start the PFE editor, use: Start > Programs > Engineering > MAE Tools > PF Editor > PFE 32
  • To start an MS DOS window to compile programs with g77, use: Start > Programs > Engineering > MAE Tools > G77

Click here for more detailed instructions  (pdf file)

Links for online courses are provided below.  These are the links that will provide you with the basic information on using Fortran 77

Online free books

The links below allow you to download free textbooks on FORTRAN that you can use as reference.

  • Interactive FORTRAN 77 - pdf format textbook - It takes a while to download because the file resides physically somewhere in the UK.  Be patient after you click on the link.  This is a good textbook - get it.

  • The Professional Programmer's Guide to Fortran 77 - pdf format book - This book is more of a reference book for the experienced programmer than a textbook.

The following links provide information on debugging Fortran 77 programs.

Debugging Fortran g77 programs

Debugging is the art of fixing errors in your computer programs.  Click here to download a pdf file with instructions and hints for debugging Fortran g77 programs.

The next section of this web page shows some useful Fortran 77 references.

Books on Fortran 77

Here is a list of a few good (not free) books on Fortran 77

  • Mayo, W.E. and M. Cwiakala, 1995, "Schaum's outline of theory and problems of PROGRAMMING WITH FORTRAN 77," Schaum Outline's series, McGraw-Hill, New York. - The best reference for the price, with lots of examples (you'll have to type them yourself, though).

  • Etter, D.M., 1993, "Structured FORTRAN 77 for Engineers and Scientists," Benjamin/Cummings, Redwood City, CA - A classical book on FORTRAN 77 with lots of programs for science and engineering

  • Click here for an extensive list of Fortran books

Next, we show some references for numerical applications of Fortran 77.

Numerical applications

The following links provide information on the application of Fortran 77 to the implementation of numerical methods:

For information on computers and programming, visit the link below.  Although prepared for programming with other software (namely, SCILAB and Visual Basic 6.0), the links provided in this page are useful to Fortran 77 programmers.
