End-Blown Flute - ChinaThe xiao is the end-blown flute of China. It is made of smooth bamboo with traditional drawing or characters on it. It has five finger holes, a thumb hole, and a pair of vent holes below the last finger holes. The xiao is a notched flute. with a u-shaped notch on the end. It is an ancient flute, dating from 1000 BC. The Japanese shakuhachi and Korean tanso are descendants of the xiao. |
